US President Donald Trump will be invited by Prime Minister Andy Burnham to the G20 summit next year, which will be held in Manchester.

This was confirmed ahead of Burnham and Trump’s first meeting today.

The G20 summit is a group of 19 major world economies, including the UK, US, China and Russia, who make up for 85% of global GDP. The leaders of these countries meet and discuss international economic issues. It was established in 1999 and last held in the UK in 2009.

It was announced that the summit would be held in the UK last year, with Andy Burnham recently confirming that it would take place in Manchester specifically.

When Trump was previously asked about Burnham, he said that he ‘doesn’t know much, except that he is very liberal and the mayor of a town’. Burnham batted back upon learning this, stating that he told Trump over the phone: “Mr President, Manchester isn’t ‘some town’, this is Manchester”.

Burnham had previously made negative remarks about the US President when he was mayor of Greater Manchester, calling his politics “poisonous” and that Trump “isn’t welcome” in Manchester. When asked about these comments, Burnham quoted “well, he’s said things as well” and “everyone says things as politicians”.

Other world leaders such as Vladamir Putin will be invited to the summit, despite tensions between the UK and Russia.

The summit will be held at the Manchester Central convention complex in Deansgate.
