Tributes paid to men killed in Greater Manchester plane crash

Tributes have been paid to the two men who were killed in a plane crash in Littleborough, near Rochdale.

Greater Manchester Police have named the two men who died as Mustafa Qays Obadey, 39, and Arian Abbasi, 36.

On Tuesday 3rd February, a light aircraft crashed into a farmland near Hollingworth Lake shortly after 11am.

The aircraft had taken off from Birmingham earlier that morning.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, the bodies of two men were recovered and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not believed anyone else was on board, and there were no reported injuries on the ground.

Arian Abbasi, 36

The family of Arian Abbasi, a pilot from Harrow in Greater London, described him as “a deeply loving father and devoted husband.

“He lived his life for his family and friends, giving them his constant love, strength and support.

“Flying was his passion, and he was on the brink of beginning an exciting new chapter with a commercial airline on 23 February; a dream he had worked toward with immense pride and determination.”

Mustafa Qays Obadey, 39

Mustafa Qays Obadey, from Greenford, London, was also killed in the crash.

A spokesperson for his family said: “(He was) the most humble, kind man you’ll ever meet. A man made of peace.

“The glue of the family and community. Always available and accepting for everyone. Thank you Mustafa.”

Investigations continue as officers search for part of the parachute system which contains propellant and has not yet been located.

The nature of the terrain, and the wide area over which it may have travelled, has made finding the device very difficult.

The device measured approximately 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm long and has a red anodised finish. It weighs less than 2 kg. It may have a silver metal collar attached at one end.

Police are telling the public not to handle the device, and if discovered to contact police immediately.

Anyone with information on the crash can contact police via 101 or on Live Chat at gmp.police.uk, quoting log 1056 of 03/02/26.
