Two people are confirmed to have died after a light aircraft crash in Littleborough, near Rochdale, yesterday morning.
The aircraft, which took off from Birmingham, crashed in a farmland near Hollingworth Lake shortly after 11am.
The police believe that no one else was on board, and there are no reported injuries on the ground.
When the emergency services arrived, the bodies of two men were recovered and pronounced dead at the scene.
Chief Superintendent Danny Inglis, from GMP’s Rochdale district, said: “This is a devastating incident where two people have lost their lives, and our thoughts are with their families and friends.
“We have been working closely with emergency service colleagues and partner agencies throughout the day to establish the full circumstances, and we will be on scene overnight and into tomorrow.
“There will be an enhanced presence as officers and investigators comprehensively survey the area and ensure all available evidence is recovered.”
Flight tracking suggests that a private aircraft left Birmingham at 9.59am, before losing signal at 10.39am south of the M62 near Marsden.
The plane is believed to be a Cirrus SR 20, and GMP are investigating the deployment of a parachute before the crash.
National Grid has been at the scene and has confirmed that there should be no disruption to the electricity supply for the local area.
The police have asked anyone with information or who witnessed the crash to contact them.
