Manchester event brings football chants to orchestral concert

On Friday 24 April, Manchester celebrated football and music by hosting a concert based on some of the most popular songs in football. The event attracted a sellout crowd, with the songs performed in an orchestral setting—something that has not been seen before.

The event was performed by the Manchester Camerata, a chamber orchestra founded in Manchester. Known for its innovative performances and collaborations with artists such as Lewis Capaldi, the orchestra helped to bridge the cultural significance of music and football through this concert.

It was described as a first-of-its-kind concert, with chants usually sung around terraces and stadiums across England brought into a concert environment. The programme included famous songs such as Three Lions and Sweet Caroline helping to boost audience participation, as many of the songs are well known in football culture.

Attendees travelled from across England for the event, with many enjoying the blend of matchday chants and live orchestral music. Some of the songs were highly recognisable, encouraging the audience to sing along and creating a stadium-like atmosphere inside the concert hall.

The concert highlighted the cultural link between football and music in the city. Hosted by a local orchestra formed in the 1970s in Manchester, it reinforced the strong community connection and the city’s wider cultural identity.

Speaking to one of the performers in the orchestra, they said it was a great opportunity to perform at the National Football Museum, with it being a local venue to the band being able to perform on home soil was a momentous occasion for the band.

The concert was able to highlight Manchester as a music and football city as combining both elements together, we can see and grasp different types of fan expression that can be adapted into new artistic forms and can be performed in different ways.

For Manchester Camerata performing on home soil makes it a special occasion for them and means so much more and the response was felt within the crowd as they were able to put on a performance which showed the link between music and football within the community.

The success of the event reflects the growing nature of current culture mixed with an orchestral twist which offers a fresh and unique style and perspective on fan culture and how they can get across the energy and passion we see on the terraces in a concert.
