Greater Manchester businesses invited to join major China trade mission

Greater Manchester businesses are being invited to take part in a major trade mission to China this summer, as regional leaders look to strengthen international partnerships and boost global competitiveness.

The five-day visit to Shenzhen and Hong Kong will take place from June 15-19 2026 and aims to connect local firms with two of China’s most influential commercial centres.

Organisers say the mission will give companies across the city-region the opportunity to explore high-growth markets, build long-term commercial relationships, and gain first-hand exposure to global supply chains and investor networks.

The initiative is being delivered by GM Business Growth Hub, Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Department for Business and Trade.

Janine Smith, Director at GM Business Growth Hub, said: “The Growth Hub works closely with businesses that are ready to scale, innovate and enter new markets, and China offers a unique combination of high demand, rapid development and strong appetite for UK expertise.”

China remains one of the UK’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade approaching £100 billion annually. Regional leaders say there continues to be strong demand for British innovation, services and advanced manufacturing expertise.

Why Shenzhen and Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is widely recognised as a global financial hub and a major centre for fintech, home to hundreds of financial technology companies and international investors.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen is regarded as one of China’s leading technology and advanced manufacturing centres, producing around one-sixth of the country’s electronics. The city is home to global technology giants including Huawei and Tencent.

Both cities are seen as key gateways into fast-moving Asian markets and innovation ecosystems.

Who can apply?

The mission is open to Greater Manchester companies already trading internationally, as well as those preparing to expand into overseas markets.

Businesses have until 27 March 2026 to register their interest. A preparatory briefing will take place during the week commencing 16 April 2026, offering market intelligence, cultural insight and practical guidance to help firms maximise the opportunity.

There are no fees to participate. Selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may also be eligible for grant funding to support travel and accommodation costs, helping to reduce financial barriers to entering the Chinese market.

Supporting long-term growth

The trade mission forms part of Greater Manchester’s broader ambition to position itself as a globally connected hub for innovation and enterprise.

Sectors expected to benefit include advanced manufacturing, digital innovation, clean growth, consumer goods and professional services areas where the region already has established strengths.

Ms Smith added: “This mission will provide invaluable first-hand market insight and access to networks that cannot be replicated remotely. Our aim is to give Greater Manchester businesses the confidence, knowledge and connections they need to succeed internationally.”

With a coordinated programme of meetings, sector visits and engagement opportunities planned, organisers say the June visit aims to lay the foundations for long-term partnerships and sustainable economic growth across the city-region.
