With half the women’s super league season played, the prospect of both Manchester-based clubs qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the same season appears likely.
For the first time in WSL history, both of the city’s clubs sit on the brink of Champions League qualification. The race for Europe is now a shared Manchester ambition, powered by contrasting tactics, but a joint belief that Manchester belongs on the European stage.
“It’s great to see”, said journalist Drew Vinestock. “The game has been growing so much over the last few years and to see the investment across the board is just inspiring.
“Considering United only achieved promotion in 2019, I’m really impressed by how far they’ve pushed some on Europe’s biggest sides. We saw how they dominated PSG earlier this season, and I really think they set the benchmark with that victory.”
In previous years, UWCL qualification was always a three-way battle with the original ‘big 3’. This included Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, with the first being the only British club to win the highly-sought title.
European success this season
However, United’s strong recruitment has prompted a strong European run this season. Currently sixth, the Red Devils have set up a play-off against Atletico Madrid to determine who advances to the quarter-finals.
The sides met earlier this season which saw United come out winners courtesy of a goal by summer recruit Fridolina Rolfö.

City are absent from this year’s competition after drawing with United at the back end of last season. A Melvine Malard equaliser saw the red side of Manchester celebrate as they poached third place from the Citizens.
However, currently 11 points clear at the top of the WSL, it all but confirms City will be returning to Europe.
Domestic success?
If City continue their imperious form, it would be the first time since the 2018/19 season that Chelsea have failed to win the league. It was Arsenal who came out victorious this season, and you would have to go back ten years for the last time City won the league – their maiden title.

Regarding United, they recently made history by reaching their first ever league cup final after defeating Arsenal 1-0. Elisabeth Terland’s sole goal means Marc Skinner’s side will face holders Chelsea.
The final will take place from Ashton Gate on 15th March with kick-off at 14:15, where United will be in strong pursuit of their first league cup title.
