Quayside Christmas Makers Market Celebrates Creativity, Community and the Magic of Making

The Quayside Christmas Makers Market returned this weekend, transforming the space into a warm hub of creativity and festive spirit. Independent makers filled the market with handmade gifts, glowing lights and the comforting sound of Christmas music, creating an atmosphere that welcomed visitors from the moment they stepped inside.

That welcoming feeling was exactly what stood out to many attending. One visitor, Tanisha Kagande, described the atmosphere as “really nice and family orientated… the atmosphere makes me feel very welcome.” She took a moment to reflect on how the warm lights and gentle music shaped her experience, saying they “set the scenery… and make me feel very much at ease” as she explored the stalls. Her words echoed the feeling shared by many: that the Quayside market offers not just shopping, but a comforting, personal festive experience.

A defining feature of the event was its focus on self-made craft and the stories behind each stall. Visitors were encouraged to speak directly with makers, learning about the process, inspiration and meaning behind the products on display. Tanisha explained, she enjoyed the “deep connection with the sellers,”  understanding “why they’ve created a certain product and the true meaning behind it”. She contrasted this with mainstream Christmas markets, where shoppers often buy things simply for “aesthetic, or because it looks nice”, rather than connecting with the person who made it.

Her reflections highlight what many visitors appreciate about the Makers Market: the chance to slow down, talk, and discover the stories behind each product.

Community remained key during the event. Tanisha explained that the market “allows individuals to have that closeness with one another… between the person selling the product and the person buying the product”.

She added that the environment feels “more personal” and inclusive, giving her the chance to “communicate with others… learn different backgrounds and meanings of history behind certain businesses”, all while enjoying the festive setting.
