Double from Captain Cullen not enough for Curzon Ashton as a late minute equaliser gives Bedford their second draw in three matches

Curzon Ashton were looking to extend their winning streak and heading into the final minutes, it seemed that Captain, Alex Cullen had done enough for the home side with two goals in the second half. However, in the penultimate minute of injury time, Bedford Town Striker Tyrone Marsh secured his second goal of the evening to level the two teams by the final whistle.

The draw seemed fitting for what had been a tense and tightly fought contest between the two mid-table teams.

As C’est la Vie Stereophonics rung out across the stadium, supporters huddled together in the Tameside Stadium on the freezing February evening.

Bedford fans were in good spirits following the 170-mile journey up north for this midweek fixture and emotions would have been high all the way back following the exciting end to the match.

At first, Curzon Ashton came out looking stronger with more conviction proving that they are still very much searching for a play off place by the end of the season. A win on Tuesday would have seen them close the gap to just five points behind the last play off position.

After just six minutes, the Curzon Ashton crowd thought they had something to celebrate, but the ball flew just shy of the bottom corner.

It took the travelling team, Bedford Town, longer to settle but after half an hour, they picked up the pace and put pressure on the Curzon Ashton defenders. As their pace picked up, so did the drumming and singing from the Away fans causing home fans to increase their volume of support too, creating a great atmosphere for the tense match.

It looked likely that Curzon Ashton would take the lead minutes before half time and had several chances, but they struggled to convert their opportunities.

Ultimately, a few minutes into the second half, it was Bedford Town who were able to get the ball in the back of the net and reward the travelling fans for all their support.

This completely shifted momentum and it was Curzon Ashton who looked to be struggling to attack and create chances.

But Cullen took a chance just seven minutes after Bedford’s goal to equalise.

Both goals added fuel to the teams as they were searching for a winning strike and in the 77th minute it looked as though Cullen had helped his team come from behind to take a well fought victory.

It was a tense final few minutes but the crowd were sure to stay until the final whistle, or may just have been frozen to their seats!

Fans were imitating the referee’s whistle as anxiety heightened, but more substitutes were made and the game carried on.

In the 97th minute, a huge goal came from Marsh as he found the top left corner and as the ball hit the back of the net, the Curzon Ashton fans’ hearts dropped.

It was a tight match and ultimately a draw seemed a fair result to mirror how both teams had played across the evening.

Curzon Ashton head Peterborough Sports on Saturday, hoping to increase their chances of qualifying for the play offs. Chester is also set to visit Bedford in hopes of reducing the five point gap between the two sides.
