Campaigners speak out against Adlington New Town plans

Two people dressed as a shark and a bee, the shark holding the sign 'no new town,' the bee holding a sign saying 'buzz off Belport.'

A plan to build 20,000 new homes is being strongly opposed by local residents.

Adlington, Cheshire, was highlighted by the government’s New Towns Taskforce as one of twelve sites across England to be converted into a new town.

The scheme would see almost 1,000 hectares of fields and farmland used for housing, decimating the green belt between Macclesfield and Stockport.

Since Adlington was recommended by the taskforce, campaigners from the surrounding towns have been protesting against this large-scale redevelopment.

Planning and attending campaign events, such as protests in Adlington and Tatton Park, are essential in efforts to shift the government’s focus away from the Adlington estate and onto using brownfield for redevelopment.

  1. Thank you for your interest Hannah. The proposal to build a new town of up to 20,000 houses on and around the site of the current Adlington Village (approx 400 houses) is flawed in so many ways. Thank you for highlighting some of the issues which include (but are not limited to):
    • Use of strategic greenbelt designed to prevent urban sprawl when brownfield has not yet been exhausted.
    • Destruction of 2500 acres of productive farmland when the UK should be working on increasing food security rather than relying on other countries to feed us.
    • The devastation of acres of wildlife rich habitats and valuable ecosystems and the plants and animals within.
•The total lack of infrastructure to the area meaning a huge cost to taxpayers and impact on the daily lives of people in a huge number of surrounding towns and villages who are already struggling with over stretched health, education, transport and utilities services.
