Banksy exhibition opens in Manchester and raises money for The Christie

A new Banksy exhibition has opened in Manchester, raising money for The Christie Charity and showcasing artwork created by cancer patients in art classes at the hospital.

‘The Mystery of Banksy – A Genius Mind’ features a collection of approximately 200 pieces by the famous street art icon.

It includes iconic Banksy graffiti, photographs, video installations, and prints reproduced for this special showcase.

Some of the most famous pieces on display include the Girl with Balloon and works from his Dismaland and Walled Off Hotel projects.

The Christie was invited to display a selection of artwork created by patients at the hospital, showing how important art can be in supporting cancer patients.

Pat Mountford, artist in residence at The Christie, said: “Art has an extraordinary ability to help people process what they’re going through.

“For many patients, the art room becomes a place of calm, creativity and connection at a time when life can feel overwhelming.

“Seeing their work showcased in a public exhibition is incredibly empowering.”

Paul King is one of the Christie patients who is having their art displayed at the exhibition. He has been attending the art sessions during his treatment for prostate cancer.

He says that these sessions have ‘completely changed’ his experiences of being in a hospital.

“When you’re going through cancer treatment, so much feels out of your control. In the art room, I can switch off from appointments and focus on creating something that’s mine.

“It’s given me confidence, helped me process what I’m going through, and introduced me to people who truly understand,” he added.

The exhibition will raise money towards a state-of-the-art Total Body PET-CT scanner used to identify cancer more easily and develop faster targeted treatment, which will be one of only five in the UK.

CEO of The Christie Charity, Louise Hadley, said that they were ‘delighted’ to be chosen for the exhibition.

“It is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us and one that will ultimately benefit cancer patients both now and in the future.

“To have a room dedicated to the artwork of patients really showcases the impact art can have,” she said.

The exhibition will run until 5 July 2026 at Depot Mayfield in Manchester.
