Work starts on housing project for people with learning disabilities in Stockport

The new housing development will see the processing of Bredbury Civic Hall and will provide 12 new homes for people with learning disabilities on the derelict site.

The scheme, delivered by MSV Housing Group, will offer purpose-built energy-efficient homes aiming to help new residents live independently with the support they need, while bringing a long-disused brownfield site back into positive use.

Features include air-source heat pumps for low-carbon heating and hot water, which will reduce running costs for residents, as well as on-site staff available 24 hours a day to provide tailored support.

The scheme has been made possible through a partnership between MSV, Stockport Council, Homes England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Stockport Council Leader, Cllr Mark Roberts, has dubbed the project “another important step toward ensuring that people with learning disabilities can live independently, safely and confidently within their local community.”

Cabinet member for regeneration Cllr Michaela Meikle added: “As we continue to regenerate Stockport, inclusive schemes like this show how disused land is being transformed to support communities and improve lives for people across the borough.”

Construction work is being carried out by PLP Construction, with design work by local architects Pozzoni Architecture.

The CEO of MSV Housing group, Charlie Norman, said: “This scheme is so important. Not only will MSV be providing much needed new homes so people can live independently in their community, but we will be bringing a brownfield site back into use.

“We are absolutely committed to developing schemes which help the most marginalised in society and these new homes will make a massive difference to the lives of the residents.”

The new houses are expected to be completed by March next year.
