Man given 28-year sentence after ‘horrific’ scissor attack on nurse

A man has been given a 28-year sentence after attacking a nurse with a pair of scissors at Royal Oldham Hospital last year.

Romon Haque, of Yasmin Gardens, Oldham, received a 22-year custodial sentence with an extra six years on licence at Minshull Street Crown Court today.

The 38-year-old previously pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and was later found guilty of attempted murder.

Detective Sergeant Jennifer O’Brien, from GMP’s Oldham district, said: “This was a horrific, unprovoked attack on a woman who was simply doing her job for those in need in a hospital.

“I want to commend the bravery of those who intervened and who prevented the situation from potentially being much more serious.

“Emergency workers should never face violence from the very people they are trying to help, and I am glad Haque is now behind bars following this vile incident.”

The court heard how the attack unfolded on Saturday 12 January 2025, after Haque asked a nurse for medication at around 11.30pm.

Haque was told that a nurse would come and see him shortly, but he instead got out of bed and approached the victim from behind with a pair of scissors he had in his pocket.

He stabbed her three times with the scissors, leaving her with serious injuries to her face, neck, and hands.

She was given urgent medical care and taken to intensive care.

Members of staff were forced to intervene and drag Haque away from the nurse.

Haque had been admitted to Royal Oldham on the 8 January for a mental health assessment, but it was determined that his symptoms were due to drug and alcohol withdrawal.

Haque was deemed fit to stand trial by psychiatrists and appeared in court in June and July last year.

After the guilty verdict in July, Claire Aitken, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Romon Haque’s savage attack of a nurse who was carrying out her duties, was truly appalling.

“After seeing that the nurse was pre-occupied with the care for another patient, he lashed out, stabbing her repeatedly with scissors.

“The jury has agreed that his attack with a bladed weapon, so vicious and aggressive in its intensity, can only have been intended to end her life.

“Haque’s brutal actions have severely affected her, causing her to end up in intensive care and lasting physical and mental trauma.

“I can only hope she can find some comfort knowing that Haque will now face the consequences of his actions that day.”
