Salford Quays has once again been transformed by Lightwaves, the city’s annual light-art festival, returning this December for its 12th edition. Running from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 December, 4–10 pm, the festival features a 1.5 km trail of light installations along the waterfront and it is free.
This year’s edition showcases 12 new installations, ranging from interactive pieces to atmospheric displays. Open to all ages and backgrounds, Lightwaves offers residents and visitors a chance to explore the waterfront in a fresh, creative way. No tickets or prior booking are required, making the festival accessible to everyone.
Among the highlights is “Our Town” by Studio Elisa Artesero, an interactive digital artwork that transforms passersby into both audience and performer, turning the pavement outside the Lowry into a living stage.

Another standout is “Triskelion” by The Academy of Live Technology, featuring three towering monoliths representing Earth, Water, and Fire. This interactive installation reacts to visitors’ presence, creating a dynamic experience with every step.

Lightwaves has become a fixture of Salford’s cultural calendar, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Rachel Candler, Interim Head of Programme at Quays Culture, says, “We try to make sure every year the artwork is different, even when people love previous installations and want them back.” She adds, “Before the cost of living crisis, free entry was important—but today, it’s even more essential. Not all light festivals are free, so this is a great opportunity to explore and meet the artists behind the work.”
As night falls, the Salford Quays waterfront transforms into a luminous wonderland. Glowing sculptures reflect off the water, while interactive lights respond to footsteps, inviting visitors to become part of the art. Pathways are lined with vibrant colours, shifting patterns, and atmospheric displays, creating a sense of discovery around every corner. From families admiring the sparkling installations to artists guiding participants through interactive pieces, Lightwaves offers an immersive, magical experience for all ages.
There are still 2 days of the event left, so if you haven’t experienced the spectacular displays and immersive installations yet, now is the perfect time to join in and witness the magic for yourself.
